During the seventh semester of our Industrial Design program, our main project revolved around a multidisciplinary Strategic Design initiative where the fields of graphic design, fashion, and industrial design converged to develop a strategy aimed at propelling our client, La Morada.
La Morada is a non-profit organization with the mission of supporting refugees and asylum seekers (migrants who do not yet have refugee status) in improving their quality of life through various activities.
Throughout the semester, we formulated a strategy that encompassed short-term objectives, considering the foundation's current resources; medium-term goals, projecting organic growth with significant potential; and long-term aspirations, aiming to maximize everything La Morada can offer to its beneficiaries.
Our proposal consisted of two main activities designed to catalyze the revitalization of La Morada, which had been adversely affected by the 2020 pandemic, leading to the interruption of its activities. The first activity involved the implementation of courses, focusing in the long term on providing useful tools for self-employment or training for refugees. Concurrently, the second activity involved the foundation's participation in mobile markets where products crafted in these markets, as well as the refugees' own products associated with La Morada, would be sold. The goal is for these markets to eventually take place on La Morada's premises as recognition within the refugee and migrant community grows.
Through our strategy, La Morada not only resumes its activities but also has the potential to become a benchmark for aiding refugees and migrants. It aims to achieve sustainability through the proceeds from courses and markets. Crucially, our strategy is designed to restore a sense of belonging to refugees, which was stripped away when they left their home countries. By fostering community through shared activities, we create a safe and recreational space for them.
COURSES
These courses will have an affordable cost, making them accessible to anyone interested in learning about their content, including refugees and individuals from Mexico City.
The courses will be conducted in the evening to allow refugees to attend after work and/or having picked up their children from school.
It is of paramount importance that the instructors work on a voluntary basis with the hope of supporting refugees. To ensure their attendance and express gratitude for their time, a significant fee of $250.00 will be offered, which can be used to cover their transportation expenses to the venue. To find instructors, La Morada will promote its presence on social media platforms to build a loyal following and subsequently reach out to experts in the field.
SHORT-TERM
Restore the sense of belonging for refugees.
MEDIUM-TERM
Empower refugees with job opportunities and self-employment to regain their independence
LONG-TERM
Provide refugees with a warm and secure space to build a sense of community.
BAZAAR
The bazaar will be held once a month. With this initiative, the aim is to provide refugees with an additional source of income and allow them to recoup their investment made in the course sessions through the sale of products created throughout the month. Moreover, refugees who wish to promote their own services or sell their products will have the opportunity to do so, considering the availability of space. For the smooth operation and management of the bazaar, La Morada will retain 20% of the profits.
This bazaar not only supports the economic empowerment of refugees but also encourages their entrepreneurial spirit, enabling them to showcase their talents and products to the wider community.
SHORT-TERM
Selling workshop-made backpacks and paintings at itinerant bazaars.
MEDIUM-TERM
Participating in two monthly bazaars, selling backpacks, workshop paintings, and refugee-made products to support them.
LONG-TERM
La Morada plans to host the bazaar on-site once participation and production increase.
