Created in collaboration with fellow designers Andres Rassam and Manuel Viniegra, Antua was our final project for our Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design. Inspired by the close and touching story of Antua, a young adventurer and relative of one of our team members, who enjoyed nature through her passion for hiking. Unfortunately, during a hiking trip in the Nevado de Toluca, she suffered a fatal accident due to a fall, lack of equipment, and absence of support on the mountain.
For us, Antua represents more than just data or numbers; it is a life that could have been saved, like those of other adventurers who have faced similar fates. Therefore, our goal was to design a product that enhances the safety of adventurers, making them feel prepared by considering the essential considerations that hiking equipment requires: being lightweight, ergonomic, compact, and durable.
We also understood that when it comes to accidents, time is crucial, and in hard-to-reach places like mountains, resources and rescuer accessibility are limited. Hence, we designed the Antua Backpack, a multifunctional backpack that converts into a stretcher when unfolded. Antua is equipped with lightweight and sturdy tubes made of carbon fiber and a safety strap. Inside, it features an additional backpack with a molle system that allows the backpack user to use the stretcher without worrying about leaving their belongings. Its versatility ensures that each adventure is backed by a reliable tool without the need to add extra items or additional weight.
